There doesn't seem to be an easy solution.
High rents, competition, and a bad economy are not good for small business.
I understand that the storefronts along Main Street command a high rent, and some landlords actually aren't even interested in renting at all.
They would rather hold out until they can get approval to demolish the building and replace it with a new one featuring storefronts at street level, and a couple of floors of expensive apartments above them. Entering in to a long term commercial lease with a new tenant would seriously impact their ability to accomplish these long term goals.
Competition is stiff too. There is no shortage of Dry Cleaners in the Main Street corrider. I've often wondered how they all survive being so close together.
I was surprised to see the new Pizza place open up. I know that it replaced one that was there for many years, but I don't remember ever seeing the original one crowded, and Mary's opening a couple of blocks to the south had to impact them. I wish them the best, but I suspect that the competition will prove to be too much to overcome for at least one of the 6 Pizza Places that are all in about a 1/2 mile radius.
Would anyone be shocked if Waldbaums were to close in the near future now that Stop & Shop has arrived?
That will leave a gaping hole in Main Street business.
The economy seems to be hurting small business all over. Dry Cleaning is a necessity for some, but not for all.
I'd imagine that with people out of work, there is less need to have their clothes cleaned. It's also possible that tight economic times have forced other's to re-evaluate the need to have their clothes done with the same frequency as they might in better times.
