The pulse is indeed there. I have lived in this community all of my life and have owned a home in Farmingdale since 1968. I have seen and heard all the arguments for and against school budgets, including the "austerity" threat. I believe that the residents of Farmingdale are smart enough and experienced enough to recognize a situation over which they have no control. Salaries are controlled by existing labor contracts. The right to hire and fire is governed by tenure. The curriculum is dictated by the state. The few things taxpayers do have control over amount to less than 5% of budget. Check for a pulse? If the taxpayer had any say in the matter, school budgets and the entrenched fat included therein (called administration) would be pared down to reflect the ability to pay. Instead, taxpayers have been lulled to sleep thinking that the State will help to pay for bloated school budgets. And when downturns come, the squealing starts and those who are entrenched recite the same worn liturgy: the kids deserve our 100% support. In fact, the kids are not getting the kind of support our outrageous budget should provide.
