I owned a business in NYC from 1985 until last August. Around that time, 20 years ago, I obtained a target permit. Later, I applied for a full carry for business. That process was expensive and took 13 months from date of application. 1 Police Plaza wanted everything but a stool sample to approve a taxpaying citizen with a business in the South Bronx for the right to protect himself and his business. 2 years ago I renewed for the 8th? time and it was like starting all over again with the original app. process. Renewals were or remain every 2 years, might be 3 now, but a heavy price. Now if I wanted to carry an illegal unregistered handgun imported from any number of states into NYC, I would have waited a day from a local in the Bronx. The thing is that NYC can only control law abiding citizens, they cannot control lawbreakers nor have they made any attempt to go after the states that allow guns into NYC and onto our streets. So until that stops, and it will never stop, call a city cop on your cellphone as the criminal approaches...response time if you are not a police officer, could be 30 minutes.
As for Nassau County, I agree, obtaining a carry permit for your business is backlogged since they have few investigators to assist your application. But as rigid as the rules may have gotten in the last decade in Nassau, they are paradise compared to NYC which again, cannot or will not take the political push it needs to control import from numerous states that do not "control" their gun sales.
As for home defense, go to your local gun store and tell them that you need a rifle for home defense. Do not buy anything high powered as it will penetrate walls and hurt someone else after it passes through the intruder. Shotguns are great, unless the intruder is near another family member. In the meantime, as you feel safer protecting your home with a rifle or shotgun, apply for a carry for target license which you can take to the range for shooting and bring home to protect your family in the evening. You not only have to protect your family from intruders but also protect them for the firearm itself by using proper safety storage for it. Ofcourse, you should have a home alarm monitored by a company that will send police and fire departments, and plenty of lighting at the four corners of your home. Two stage lighting keeps your property lit then gets extremely bright when someone approaches your home. And don't forget to put your alarm sign on your windows and one post on your lawn. I sleep very well at night, shouldn't we all?
