FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Two New York politicians say the American Airpower Museum on Long Island is moving to clear the way for a new runway project at Republic Airport. The FAA is improving its runway safety program at the Farmingdale airport, putting the museum which sits on the property at risk.
Sen. Charles Schumer and Congressman Steve Israel say they persuaded the FAA to allow the use of federal funds to move the museum to another location on the airport property.
The museum features several dozen vintage aircraft and plays host throughout the year to various tributes honoring veterans. On Pearl Harbor Day, planes leave Republic and fly over the Statue of Liberty, dropping flowers in remembrance.
